Stone & Oak Studio Style Guide
Elevated. Natural. Effortless.
Imagery that feels as authentic as it is artful
We believe that timeless images are created when thoughtful styling meets authentic connection. Our sessions are inspired by nature, rooted in warmth, and elevated with an editorial eye — so your photographs feel as beautiful as they are honest.
“Think luxury meets lived-in.”
Our clients share our love for the outdoors — mountain trails, golden pastures, crisp air, and quiet moments that translate into their every day style. We aim to capture your family in a way that feels genuine, but with a touch of sophistication. Think luxury meets lived-in — perfectly imperfect, warm, and full of soul.
To create cohesive, elevated imagery, we recommend choosing outfits in soft, earthy tones and muted neutrals that complement Colorado’s landscapes and the Stone & Oak Studio aesthetic.
A good rule of thumb - think about the colors you would find in nature at the different times of year. For a fall/winter shoot, you might want to choose deeper earth tones, and for a spring/summer, you might choose creams or pastels.
Beautiful choices include:
Sage, olive, forest greens
Warm rust, terracotta, cinnamon
Cream, ivory, oatmeal, warm taupe
Muted blues, navy, stormy grays, slate
Dusty rose, soft mauve, or muted clay as gentle accents
Avoid overly bright neons, busy logos, or colors that clash with natural settings. When in doubt, earthy > loud, timeless > trendy.
Coordinating doesn’t mean matching. Aim for a complementary palette — mix textures, solids, and subtle patterns (like stripes or florals) that harmonize rather than compete. Think of it like styling a dinner table: different elements, one beautiful story.
Tip: Lay everyone’s outfits out together on a bed — they should look like a well-curated collection, not a matching set.
Textures & Layers
Texture photographs beautifully. Incorporate cozy knits, flowy linen dresses, structured jackets, leather boots, or vintage pieces to add depth and interest to your images. Layers create movement and variety, especially during outdoor sessions where the breeze can play with fabrics.
A Few Extras
Bring a neutral-toned blanket or shawl that complements your outfits — they make for gorgeous snuggle shots.
If little ones are involved, dress them comfortably and bring a backup outfit just in case.
Layers also help little ones adjust to changing weather quickly without compromising the look.
Finishing Touches
Subtle accessories — a hat, a shawl, heirloom jewelry — can elevate your look and add personality. Keep hair natural and lightly styled so it moves freely in the wind.
